The Dreadnought is a large bodied instrument originally designed to hold it's own against the projection and volume of the Banjo in the 1920's. Since that time, the Dreadnought has been considered the standard for bluegrass players, both in lead and accompaniment positions. While not known as a traditional fingerstyle body shape (like the 000/OM and smaller), the Dreadnought was used by Bert Jansch- one of the true fathers of fingerstyle- as his main guitar throughout his 46 year career!
